Why ETFs Are an Important Facet in the Market Ecosystem | ETF Trends

Exchange traded funds are quickly becoming the go-to investment vehicle of choice as investors from a range of different backgrounds nimbly weave in and out of the markets, especially during periods of high volatility.

“Volumes were through the roof both across traditional equities, but more importantly of course, we’re talking about exchange traded funds, breaking 40% or more of our total volume. And the key always in my mind is no one’s talking about it. So why aren’t they talking about it? Because, it all worked and it worked really well,” Douglas Yones, Head of Exchange Traded Products, NYSE, said at Inside ETFs 2019.

There are currently 2,262 exchange traded products, which cover both exchange traded funds and exchange traded notes, trading in U.S. markets, with $3.9 trillion in assets under management, across 4 exchanges, according to XTF data.

The average daily trading volume has increased by 11.3% to $105.5 billion, compared to the same period last year. For March alone, average daily volume increased 12.8% to $96.0 billion.
