Overall, ETF investors are looking to increase or at least maintain ETF use, with a more favorable outlook for the investment vehicle, compared to alternative indexing products. Moreover, investors have highlighted total expense ratio, underlying index and bid/offer spreads as the three most important criteria when picking an ETF.

By region, Europe has the largest number of offerings, with 2,180 exchange traded products on the market as of the end of February, according to BlackRock. However, Europe-listed ETFs only hold $428.8 billion in assets, or 17.6% of total market share.

In comparison, there were 1,568 U.S.-listed ETFs as of the end of February, with $1.7 trillion in assets.
