ETFs had a standout year in 2024, seeing over $1 trillion in flows for the first year in history. Total ETF assets under management grew to an impressive $10.4 trillion by year end thanks to strong flows and price appreciation.
Equity ETFs Saw Strong Flows Through the Year
Equity ETFs took in $775 billion in assets in 2024. Furthermore, nearly $667 billion flowed into U.S. equity ETFs and nearly $109 billion went into international equity ETFs last year.
The top U.S. equity ETFs by 2024 net flows include the Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (VOO), which saw $116 billion in net flows, the iShares Core S&P 500 ETF (IVV), which took in $87 billion, and the Vanguard Total Stock Market ETF (VTI), which garnered $29 billion.
The most popular international equity ETF in 2024 by flows was the iShares Core MSCI EAFE ETF (IEFA), which saw $11.6 billion. Additionally, the Vanguard FTSE Developed Markets ETF (VEA) saw $11.3 billion and the Vanguard Total International Stock ETF (VXUS) saw $10.7 billion in net flows.
Top Fixed Income ETFs
Fixed income ETFs saw $303 billion in flows in 2024. Of this, $227 billion went into U.S. fixed income ETFs and $76 billion went into international fixed income ETFs.
The U.S. fixed income ETF to see the greatest flows last year was the iShares Core U.S. Aggregate Bond ETF (AGG) with $21 billion. AGG is followed by the Vanguard Total Bond Market ETF (BND) with $19 billion. Finally, the iShares 0-3 Month Treasury Bond ETF (SGOV) with $12.2 billion.
For the international fixed income ETF category, the winners included the Janus Henderson AAA CLO ETF (JAAA), the Fidelity Total Bond ETF (FBND), and the Vanguard Total International Bond ETF (BNDX). JAAA saw $11.2 billion in net flows, FBND garnered $10.5 billion, and BNDX took in $8.2 billion.
Commodities ETFs Saw Modest Flows in 2024
Finally, commodities ETFs took in a combined $1.1 billion in net flows in 2024.
The top funds by 2024 flows all saw modest flows, with the SPDR Gold MiniShares Trust (GLDM) topping the list with $1.1 billion. Next, the iShares Silver Trust (SLV) garnered $788 million. Finally, the abrdn Bloomberg All Commodity Strategy K-1 Free ETF (BCI) took in $460 million.
