Up more than 28% YTD, near-term gains for shares of Facebook parent Meta (META) could be limited, according to conventional wisdom. The company’s market capitalization of $1.89 trillion, which makes it the sixth-largest member of the S&P 500, may add to that argument.
More discerning perspective counters the aforementioned views. And it may indicate the Magnificent Seven member remains worthy of consideration. It may also indicate Meta stock could reward short-term traders and long-term investors. For those in the former camp, the Direxion Daily META Bull 2X Shares (METU) could amplify short-term gains in the high-flying stock.
Put simply, METU attempts to deliver 200% of the daily performance of Meta shares. Experienced traders know geared ETFs like METU are often best deployed when there are visible catalysts on the horizon. These catalysts include earnings reports and industry conference conferences. On that note, METU could indeed be worthy of near-term consideration.
Big Week May Be Looming for Meta, METU
Obviously, shares of Meta have delivered for investors, without the help of a Federal Reserve interest rate cut. That doesn’t mean the stock and METU won’t be responsive to Fed easing. Bond traders believe that’s a foregone conclusion at the September 17 Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting.
But September 17 could bring news specific to Meta that could impact METU. That’s the day on which the company holds its annual developers conference. In a recent report, BofA, which rates Meta a “buy” with a $900 price target, said the conference is worth watching.
“Last year’s event signaled a strategic shift from VR to mixed-reality glasses, and we expect this year’s event to focus on glasses hardware innovation and expanding AI capabilities across glasses and Meta’s apps,” according to BofA. “We expect: (1) official unveiling of Hypernova smart glasses; (2) demo Gesture-control wristband; (3) new smart glasses developer toolkit; (4) update on next-gen holographic glasses (Orion); and (5) 3rd generation Ray-Ban smart glasses with new features and capabilities. For developers, Meta may also use the event to unveil new AI features across core apps, updates on Meta AI, and Llama.”
Analyst Justin Post said it’s likely Meta will detail how users are increasingly embracing AI across its various platforms. These include Facebook and Instagram. The conference could also bring some talk of the company’s agentic AI plans and progress. Those could be the catalysts needed to spark METU to short-term gains.
