Biotechnology ETFs have been getting plenty of positive attention in recent weeks, a trend that certainly extends to the SPDR S&P Biotech ETF (NYSEArca: XBI). The equal-weight XBI, the second-largest biotech ETF by assets, is up more than 40% year-to-date, making it one of this year’s best-performing non-leveraged ETFs.

There are plenty of fundamental accolades pertaining to biotech stocks and ETFs such as XBI. The group is attractively valued relative to historical norms and biotech has a historical tendency to perform well in the fourth quarter, among other near-term positives for the sector. It appears some traders are reacting to those themes.

“So far today, XBI has seen roughly 38,000 calls change hands — more than four times the number of puts traded, and seven times the fund’s average intraday call volume. XBI call volume is now pacing for the 99th percentile of its annual range. Most of the action centers on the overhead November 90 call, where a trader seemingly bought to open 22,218 contracts this morning, at $2.06 apiece, or about $4.6 million total,” according to Schaeffer’s Investment Research.

Healthcare stocks are also showing attractive valuations relative to other defensive sectors, which are richly valued. Biotechnology historically trades at multiples that are elevated relative to broader benchmarks, but after last year’s of struggles for biotechnology names, some analysts see value with some big-name biotech stocks.

Biotech “trades more than 25% below its 15-year average based on historical and forward price-to-earnings ratios. Compared with the broader market, biotech stocks are also trading at a discount and far below their historical average,” according to State Street.

The robust “appetite for XBI calls is relatively rare. The fund’s 10-day put/call volume ratio on the International Securities Exchange (ISE), Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE), and NASDAQ OMX PHLX (PHLX) indicates that buyers have picked up 4.52 XBI puts for every call during the past two weeks. This ratio is higher than 95% of all other readings from the past 12 months, indicating a bigger-than-usual affinity for XBI puts over calls in the past two weeks,” notes Schaeffer’s.

ETF traders who are betting big on the biotechnology sector rebound have also utilized leveraged long options including the Direxion Daily S&P Biotech Bull Shares (NYSEArca: LABU), which takes the 3x or 300% daily performance of the S&P Biotechnology Select Industry Index. That is the same index XBI tracks.
