Year-to-date, the iShares U.S. Telecommunications ETF (NYSEArca: IYZ) rose 1.3%, Vanguard Telecommunication Services ETF (NYSEArca: VOX) gained 2.6%and Fidelity MSCI Telecommunication Services Index ETF (NYSEArca: FCOM) increased 3.0%.

Moreover, investors should be wary about materials stocks as the sector has turned in negative performances more often. While the S&P 500 Materials Sector has generated an average 1.8% return for the month of July over the past 10 years, the sector has only been positive four of the past 10 years.

Year-to-date, the Materials Select Sector SPDR (NYSEArca: XLB) was up 0.4%, Vanguard Materials ETF (NYSEArca: VAW) was 0.2% higher and iShares U.S. Basic Materials ETF (NYSEArca: IYM) was down 1.6%.
