Let’s look at some September exchange traded fund (ETF) happenings: The ETF 50 Index increased 4.7%, which is its largest monthly gain this year. Aaron Siegel for Investment News reports that the benchmark contains 50 of the most popular ETFs, and it advanced 3.5% in the third quarter and finished 11.5% ahead during the first nine months of 2007.

Recorded gains for ETF investors were $17.2 billion in September, bringing year-to-date profits to $48.54 billion. Small-caps, finance and value securities were the weakest groups for domestic stocks. Some of the winners for September and their year-to-date performance included:

  • iShares Brazil Index (EWZ) – up 65.5%
  • iShares FTSE/Xinhua China 50 Index (FXI) – up 66.4%
  • iShares Latin America 40 (ILF) – up 47.9%
  • iShares Emerging Markets (EEM) – up 35.0%
