Small providers of exchange traded funds are still in the game. Using quantitative screening, First Trust Portfolios offer ETFs that have a narrow focus on indexes. The current ETFs available from First Trust include Morningstar Dividend Leaders (FDL), Nasdaq 100 Equal Weighted (QQEW), IPOX 100 (FPX), DJ Select MicroCap (FDM) and Nasdaq 100 Technology (QTEC). They are in the process of launching a few more this month, which will focus on biotechnology, the Internet and a modified S&P 500. Each of these ETFs takes a specific look at the index with the hope of adding more alpha to the portfolio.
