The top three performing ETFs for the first quarter of 2006 are quite a triumvirate. Here’s a quick peek:

  • PowerShares WilderHill Clean Energy (PBW) is up 31% YTD. As points out "The fund has 41 stocks in it, most of which you probably haven’t heard of, but as is the case with most PowerShares funds, no one stock has too large a weighting. Its largest holding, at 4.1% of assets, is the carbon-fiber maker Zoltek (ZOLT)" …which is up 8% today alone.
  • Internet Infrastructure HOLDRs (IIH) is up 25% for the quarter. There are currently 14 companies in the portfolio, but VeriSign and BEA Systems make up 2/3 of the assets alone.
  • iShares FTSE/Xinhua China 25 Index (FXI) has made 21% so far this year. This fund is probably one of the best diversified China plays with 25 Chinese holdings. China Mobile and PetroChina are the top two positions.
