A tumultuous end to the year for stocks is prompting many investors to embrace safer assets, including gold exchange traded funds. The SPDR Gold Shares (NYSEArca: GLD), the world’s largest physically-backed gold ETF, is up nearly 2% over the past week and 3.81% this month.

With some market observers betting the U.S. dollar will retreat in 2019, there is some renewed enthusiasm for gold and the related ETFs. Some believe that strong fundamentals may continue to support gold prices beyond safe-haven buys in the year ahead.

The Federal Reserve’s tightening regime, which as of Wednesday, Dec. 19 th included four interest rate hikes this year, is widely viewed as one of the major factors hindering gold and gold exchange traded funds this year.

Higher U.S. interest rates have contributed to upside that has made the dollar one of the world’s best performing major currencies this year. Commodities, including gold, are denominated in dollars, explaining why ETFs such as the SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) and the Aberdeen Physical Swiss Gold Shares (SGOL) have delivered slack performances in 2018.

“The Fed has a tendency to overdo it with its monetary policy, and I think it is tightening too much and too quickly right now,” reports InvestorPlace. “The Fed forecasted that only two additional rate hikes would be necessary in 2019 — down from three previously — but I would say that no additional rate hikes are necessary next year.”

Golden Opportunity

Much of the near-term thesis for gold revolves around the Fed’s plans for interest rates. The Fed has boosted borrowing costs three times this year and market observers widely expect a fourth rate hike in December. However, President Trump has not been shy about saying he would like to see the Fed slow its pace of rate increases.

Gold prices have recently stayed above the mid-August lows and a move close to $1,300 per ounce could trigger more buying. Rising interest rates have also stymied gold this year, but real rates are stabilizing, which could benefit bullion.

Some market observers believe commodities can bounce back in 2019 with gold and oil looking particularly attractive.

“While I do think we are due for a bounce from oversold conditions, the trend is certainly to the downside right now,” according to InvestorPlace. “Therefore, I am recommending a play on a defensive commodity that investors often turn to as a safe-haven during volatile times: Gold.”
