The 2018 Disruptive ETF Virtual Summit kicked off at 10:00 a.m. ET Thursday with a panel experts divulging their industry knowledge on robotics, AI & automation followed by a second panel of experts discussing their thoughts on environmental, social and governance (ESG) investing.

The third panel discussed the battle between online retail versus brick-and-mortar, featuring Simeon Hyman, Global Investment Strategist, Head of Investment Strategy Group, ProShares; Christian Magoon, Founder and CEO, Amplify ETFs; and Sylvia Jablonski, Managing Director, Co-Head of the Capital Markets & Institutional Strategy Team, Direxion.

The discussion began sizing up both retail industries, and the state of the brick-and-mortar industry when large retailers like Sears are declaring bankruptcy. Registrants at the virtual summit were asked whether this trend would continue next year, which showed the majority positing that the pace would continue as is or increase.

“The performance of the brick-and-mortar folks have lagged the S&P 500,” said Hyman.

With the holiday shopping season looming, the panel of experts were asked if the growth in online retail has hit a plateau or if there is still more room to run.

“We still think it’s early in the game,” said Magoon.

“If the underlying consumer has more money to spend, he or she will drive that sector up going forward,” said Jablonski.
