The new trade pact allows Abe to put more fire power in his so-called Third Arrow of economic reforms, which many observers have been criticizing on the lack in progress. For instance, the Trans-Pacific Partnership has started a process of changing Japan’s agricultural lobby to embrace a long-delayed modernization of the country’s reliance on heavy protections for an aging and smaller farming sector.
Nevertheless, the new Pacific trade deal still needs to go through the U.S. Congress.
