The U.S. market lows earlier in July also coincided with with an unspecified technical problems at the New York Stock Exchange, which halted trading for almost half of the session. Additionally, the plunge in Chinese shares also contributed to further equity pressure.

However, stability in the Chinese markets helped spur greater risk-on trades, supporting U.S. and global equities.

Furthermore, a tentative Greek agreement in mid-July to enact tougher austerity measures to payback creditors helped alleviate some of the uncertainty.

U.S. equities, though, swung through the rest of the month as mixed economic news and speculation of a Federal Reserve rate hike kept markets from breaking out.
