April ETF Inflows: Equities Trump Fixed Income

At the sector level, in addition to energy funds, ETFs tracking healthcare, telecom and technology stocks saw inflows last month. However, those inflows combined for just $347 million, a far cry from the $1.9 billion investors allocated to energy ETFs. [An Important Metric for an Energy ETF]

The Energy Select Sector SPDR (NYSEArca: XLE) is up nearly 4% this year, making it the fourth-best of the nine sector SPDRs after it was the worst of the nine last year. Investors have added $1.45 billion to XLE since the start of the second quarter.

Although commodities, including oil and industrial metals, performed well last month, most commodity ETFs lost assets. Investors yanked $683 million from energy ETFs in April, according to State Street data.
