Number of ETFs in Danger of Closure Rises

It is also important to note that the decision to close an ETF or ETN lies with the issue, so an appearance on the ETF Global list or a related list does not mean closure is imminent nor does it mean closure has even been announced.

Five ETFs will close Friday when FactorShares liquidates its suite of five spread products, which currently have about $7.5 million in combined assets under management. [FactorShares ETFs to Close Friday]

The current ETF Global list of potential closures, which can be seen here, is heavy on commodities and volatility ETFs and ETNs.

When the list was constructed, the iPath US Treasury Flattener ETN (NYSEArca: FLAT) was the largest constituent with over $4.8 million in assets under management.

FLAT is inversely linked to the performance of the underlying Index and seeks to capture returns from a ‘flattening’ of the U.S. Treasury yield curve through a notional rolling investment in 2-year and 10-year U.S. Treasury note futures contracts.
