Looking ahead, analysts are not anticipating a big boost to back-to-school sales, the industry’s second-largest selling period before the holiday season, reports Andria Cheng for MarketWatch.

The second-quarter “ended on a downbeat,” Craig Johnson of consulting firm Customer Growth Partners, said in the MarketWatch article. “We aren’t expecting any retail numbers that are going to be outperformers.”

“Consumers are not racing to the mall,” Barbara Khan, a Wharton School professor, said in the MarketWatch article. “Recovery is progressing but it’s sluggish. There’s some restraint.”
