The utility stocks are usually viewed as boring and conservative and known for their consistent profit growth.  Lately the industry has been going through consolidation and the stocks have been performing.  Utilities tend to do well in times of economic uncertainty.  For the past month the Utilities Select Sector SPDR (XLU) exchange traded fund was up 5%.  Top holdings in this ETF include Exelon Corp. (EXC), Duke Energy (DUK) and TXU Corp. (TXU).  Up 11%, 10% and 21% respectively for the year.
