Ok. As I said in the above post, expect a pull back. I would say that the past six weeks or so qualify. Time to start scaling into your positions with small share sizes. Just a guess, but we're probably close to the bottom of this pull back. Unless the current administration continues it's take over of specific industries and sectors . . .

Good Luck

4/15/2010
Personally, I like the energies. Things like KOL and TAN are a couple of examples, which I currently own. I think the financials still have a lot of upside, like XLF (currently own also).

There is so much I would like to say, I could probably fill up a book. The first red flag that comes to mind is for you not to get stuck in the buy and hold mentality. The single biggest thing for you to teach your grandson is that small loses are OK, big loses are not OK. Which means you have to put in a stop order to sell the ETF if it goes below a certain point. You can always get back into it again later. Maybe even a trailing stop so you don't have to attend it on a daily basis.

Back to ETF's, absolutely stay away from ETF's that are based in "futures". Also, absolutely stay away from ETF's that are "leveraged". Also avoid ETF's that are thinly traded. For stocks, I like a minimum average of one million shares traded daily. For ETF's, I'll go down to a volume maybe just under 500K, but I like more; TAN just barely qualifies, but I like the upside potential.

As I type, the DOW is at 11,111. Pretty cool. The point is that we will be having a pull back in the near future. That's just what the market does. It goes up and down. Much like the teeth on a saw blade. The safest entry is after a pullback.

Reading all of the post's here on the forum would give you good insight. Just don't get too hung up on things that sound overly technical. Good trading is much simpler than most people make it. I have made a lot of post's here on this forum. Maybe clicking on that word "member" under my icon or name will give you a list of post's to track back on.

Remember, above all, keep your loses small and don't be afraid to get back into a trade!

Good Luck

My grandson worked a summer job last summer and we funded a roth for him at Schwab. What would you suggest for a ETF with a long term growth potential. I look forward to your help.
