If you are truly an investor, which means buying and holding for several years, then the world is currently your oyster. Although bonds sound safe, a significantly better return is more likely by taking on minimal risk. The economies and markets of the globe are currently down to levels not seen in quite some time. Some say they will get worse over the next year or two. It is very rare that opportunities like this are presented to us.

Consider ETF's based around various global commodities and international economies. Yes, there will be more volatility in the future, which can work to your advantage. There are also various tax implications on different types of ETF's. I think ETF's based in commodities receive favorable treatment from the IRS.
