Simple questions that could require long answers.

I personally like to see volume on any equity that I trade. And will avoid anything that trades on too low of a volume.

If you are new to ETF's, I would recommend that you stay away from the leveraged funds and any fund whose underlying is futures. Go to the Yahoo Financial site, enter the ticker of the ETF you are interested in, then click Holdings on the blue side bar on the left.

You want to see a basket of stocks there. That alone will buy you a lot of safety. Then apply whatever strategy works for you from there.

Hi guys, I am new one here and I am looking for your help.

Since I have a list of several ETFs for which I would like to check liquidity I will appreciate your suggestions.

- I found out that ETF’s liquidity is not determined by its trading volume, but the trading volume is more of an indicator of a funds popularity and how much it was traded in the past – not how liquid it is.
-So there is a suggestion that better gauge of liquidity is to look at the number of shares and other assets being traded. (is this approach okay, any other innovative measures could be taken?)

-For which information should I look/be careful for when I will investigating assets liquidity (Volume -buying and selling, or anything else?)

Thanks,

Chaas,

Maybe you could write something on the psychological aspects of trading (whether ETF's or stocks) and why the vast majority of traders make irrational decisions.

For example, after they make a mistake then look back in hindsight they say "I'll never do that again". But then, in relatively short order, they go ahead and make that exact same mistake again.

Just a thought.

I'm not sure what you mean by "large inflows", or over what time period, but I don't see anything unusual going on. Maybe you are seeing higher volume?

For a triple leveraged ETF, my strategy is always the same. Look for a trend down, then look for weakness to short on after a rally in price.

Good luck! You'll probably need it; leveraged funds are very misunderstood by the vast majority of traders out there. Be sure to understand and use risk management.

I have 2 questions that I am desperatley seeking an answer to.

Question #1 - When an etf experiences large inflows, what does this mean as far as whether the stock is likely to go up or likely to go down?

Question #2 - Does anyone have any prediction about FAZ for 2012 which has been experiencing huge inflows?

Hey,

I'm about to get started with writing my Masterthesis. So far my Professors haven't been very helpful with finding a topic.

I would like to write about ETFs but I havent figgured out what in particular would be intresting for me to research.

So far I thought ETF investment strategies could be quite intresting...
Or estimating why there are differences in tracking errors among different ETFs

Any Ideas what a good topic could be? Since there is not that much literature on ETFs I find it quite hard to decide. My University is a Research University and they seem to dislike practical stuff. So they preffer some empirical research. I have access to Datastream,WRDS and CRSP.

Any Ideas?
Thank you!

Hey Tom,
Can't seem to log in to comment on the home page, but I had to chuckle when I saw your idea today for a turn around play in Natural Gas! I gave up on going long UNG quite some time ago. Follow the trend, my friend. Do not try to catch the bottom!! I have several friends who have tried that (myself included?!), I tell them to get out as quick as they can. If the trend does decide to change and go up, the chart will tell you. No need to guess at the bottom.

I can't imagine that the economy will improve enough to play UNG on the long side anytime in the next year or two.

8-9-11
The VXX is an interesting equity to trade. And yes, it usually tracks the opposite of the S&P 500, but not always. Knowing what it is will help you to understand why it does what it does. Do you know what the VIX is? It is a ratio of puts and calls on the S&P 500. So as those options get bought and sold, it changes the VIX. VIX will not ALWAYS move inverse to the underlying equity.

And yes, the VXX attempts to track the VIX. I tried reading the prospectus, and couldn't find it, but I think it resets each morning similar to a leveraged ETF. Anyway, the bigger point being that once trading begins, traders can and will make VXX diverge from VIX due to what they perceive (or predict) the VIX will be doing later in the session.

Personally, I don't like to buy VXX, I like to short it. Like right now might be a good time. The reason I like to short it is due to that long standing trend; pull up a two year chart. Don't fight the trend.

Hope that helps.

The VXX should work just inverse to the S&P Index. This is my thinking! That is why I can not understand the VXX decreases of 7/29 & 8/1! The Vix increased by 5% on 7/29 while the VXX decreased by 1.5%? Not sure about today 8/1, but the S & P lost over 5 points, and the VXX also sustained a loss of 4.27%? Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Hi Darren,

I think it is always best to invest with a long term view- after all ETFs do not charge you with a ridiculous management fee like mutual funds, so you can hold on to them and not to worry if you make a quick buck on your investment. But at the same time if you are very certain about certain stock movements in the near future, go for it!

So lets say you have IVV or a similar ETF in a Roth IRA.

Doesn't to make more sense to buy and hold then to set a stop loss?

Hello all,

New member to the forum here. Been investing in mutual funds for a long time and have done some individual stock investing. Just purchased my first two ETFs. Just curious, do you guys typically use stop loss orders with your ETFs, or do you basically just buy and hold while you keep an eye on them. I understand there are different philosophies, just trying to get a feel for what others are doing. Thanks in advance.

I tried an entry after the last post above but got stopped out. Then after TAN hit 7 and came back up above, I piled in the shares. Looks like I got my 25% out of the trade, wonder if I can get my 50% . . .

Well, here we are. It is now next year. No brains were required. All you had to do was throw money at the market and hold it there for a few months.

I was fully invested with all of my capital in less than conservative equities, so I'm looking good now.

In case you haven't noticed yet, it is now a bull market.

Donato, yes the analysis is complicated. I could not find a simple way to summarize the data and convey a certain message. The analysis is not intended to give support to any single trading strategy, such as momentum trading (if that is what you mean by buying while prices rise and vice versa). However, the most important conclusion is that stock selection may generate less alpha than it used to. For most of the market cap spectrum, a strategy based on stock selection alone may not be as effective as a combination of stock selection and broad market trend following (such as momentum trading, but on a wide range of stocks or ETFs). Of course, other conclusions can be drawn and debated at length.

Looks like TAN is getting ready for another buy in. Not a big mover and shaker, I'm only looking to make 25 to 50% on this one.
