Cyclical stocks and sector-related exchange traded funds are pushing ahead while safer, low-beta areas begin to fall behind. For instance, the Technology Select Sector SPDR (NYSEArca: XLK) rose 4.4%, Industrial Select Sector SPDR (NYSEArca: XLI) increased 3.3% and Materials Se...

When it comes to equity-based volatility exchange traded funds, it is the "low vol" variety that command most of the attention and assets. The PowerShares S&P 500 Low Volatility Portfolio (NYSEArca: SPLV) and the iShares MSCI USA Minimum Volatility ETF (NYSEArca: USMV) hav...

Although so-called fundamental, intelligently indexed or smart beta exchange traded funds have been around for, in some cases, seven years or more, 2013 will go down as the year that these funds really captured their place in the ETF conversation. Statistics prove as much. Las...

As U.S. stocks have soared in 2013, one of last year's most popular trends in the exchange traded funds world has taken some lumps. Low volatility ETFs, though not surprisingly, have lagged the S&P 500. While the S&P 500 is up almost 27% year-to-date, the PowerShares S...

It is not a stretch to say that 2013 has been the year of "intelligent indexing" or "smart beta" strategies gaining prominence in the exchange traded funds industry. The growth of smart beta ETFs may just be getting started as institutional investors plan to boost their usage...

Investors still like low volatility exchange traded funds. Combine inflows of about $1.52 billion this year to the iShares MSCI USA Minimum Volatility ETF (NYSEArca: USMV) and the PowerShares S&P 500 Low Volatility Portfolio (NYSEArca: SPLV) say as much. It is also hard t...

Low-volatility ETFs have been extremely popular with risk-averse investors who want to dip a toe back into the stock market. But what about their mirror image, high-beta ETFs? After years of holding back, investing in fixed-income assets for safety and yield, investors are now...
