Josh Charlson, Morningstar’s director of manager research for alternative strategies, joined ETF Trends Publisher Tom Lydon at the Morningstar ETF Conference in Chicago to discuss the value of alternative investment strategies.
Although alternative strategies have fallen out of favor as U.S. bonds and global equities have rallied in recent years, Charlson notes there is value in thinking ahead and that alternatives can help smooth out a portfolio when large market downturns occur.
“There is a big educational component to it where you’re talking about the overall outcome you’re looking for in a portfolio,” said Charlson. “You’re going to get some positive, absolute return. It’s (about) setting expectations properly for clients.”
