Tom Lydon Interviews Morningstar's Ben Johnson

Actively managed exchange traded funds are seeing a little more momentum as fund providers expand offerings backed by their research teams’ expertise.

ETF Trends’ Tom Lydon sat down with Ben Johnson, Director of Global Passive Funds Research for Morningstar, at the TD Ameritrade 2014 National Conference to discuss the growing active ETF space.

At the conference, PIMCO revealed a bomb shell, announcing the launch of 19 actively managed ETFs based off its existing mutual funds. [PIMCO to Bolster Active ETF Roster With 19 New Offerings]

“PIMCO gets it,” Johnson said. “They get that the ETF – really at its essence – is just a distribution mechanism. It’s a new way to deliver similar strategy to end investors; no different than a mutual fund, no different from any of the other distribution mechanisms available to asset managers to deliver their strategies to the end investor.”
