Sudanfree_etf Yesterday Claymore Securities launched the first exchange traded fund(ETF) based on the Sudan divestment issue on the American Stock Exchange. This socially responsible ETF is the Claymore/KLD Sudan Free Large-Cap Core ETF (KSF) that tracks the KLD Large-Cap Sudan Free Social Index, according to the press release. Claymore is the first to offer an ETF based on an index with a Sudan-free mandate in the methodology. Citizens concerned about the crisis in Darfur have worked toward legislature and mandates to eliminate corporate support of Sudan’s current regime. To be part of the KLD index, business involvement is screened for:

  • Owns or controls business or property in Sudan
  • Has employees or facilities in Sudan
  • Provides goods or services to companies domiciled in Sudan
  • Obtains goods/services from Sudan
  • Has distribution agreements with companies domiciled in Sudan
  • Issues credits or loans to companies domiciled in Sudan
  • Purchases goods or commercial paper issued by the government of Sudan

    To whomever it concerns-

I'll be very honest here....Everyone invests to make money right? Well, just like anything else, nobody is a jack of all trades-or what would they be?!....master of NONE!....In all honesty, the world is quite large ....Alot of countries have their specialty....Its always a positive to own something prior to it being in excellent shape performancewise, right?....ETFs are wonderful in that aspect! If you don't want to invest in some country, in terms of what they do, that is completely any investors choice..My drive is to make highest returns possible...Thats what I pay attention for-thats a real specialty of going global in etf world!

  • Hi Tom,

Great post and this subject interests me more and more. Obviously, nothing can be 100% free of cruelty but if more and more people show interest in socially responsible companies, it could make for a great push in healthier directions.

I think, like many other people, that these types of ETFs, i.e. socially responsible ones, do not yield as much as the others. Am I wrong?

I would love to see more posts on socially conscious ETFs.

    Thanks,

    Nick
  • Wow, ETFs are popping up like wildflowers. But their is almost a leak somewhere in the system. I am not sure I can trust this ETF to be Sudan Free
